Beach Volleyball
Beach
Volleyball is a sport growing in popularity around the world and certainly
gaining momentum in New Zealand. The game played on the sand has its
own set of rules making it slightly different to the indoor game.
Teams consist of two players who work hard to defend their 8m x 8m
court space. Games are played best of three sets with the first two
sets being played to 21 points (win by two points) and the tie break
third set being played to 15 (win by two points). Teams change ends
every 7 points (or 5 in the third set) to allow for the elements –
wind, sun etc. The game certainly has good spectator appeal with the
athletic players clad in typical beach attire – board shorts
for the men and bikinis for the women. For New Zealand it is our best
opportunity of representation at the Olympics with players competing
in the World Series to qualify.
In
Hawke’s Bay we have good sandy beaches at Waimarama, Ocean and
Waipatiki. For those who don’t want to travel that far a small
area of natural sand has been groomed on the sandy beach in Hardinge
Road, Ahuriri, Napier. This is a very safe swimming beach and there
is room enough for 2 courts. With our player base being small this
is the place where most of our regular beach activities occur.
